  • Bike Lights (compulsory front and rear).
  • Bike insurance (recommended).
  • Travel to and from the event.
  • Items not stated in the itinerary/inclusions section of the terms and conditions.

How often are the rest stops?
There are energy snack stops along the route at approximately every 20-30 km.

At the half-way point there is a hot meal stop where there will also be toilets, an area to sit down and relax with your fellow Moonriders, medics, and also bike mechanics on to assist with any issues!

Full details of the stop locations will be in your rider packs, on the GPS downloads in your departure packs one-month prior to the challenge.

How tough is the cycle?
The ride is challenging – 100km in the saddle is a good ride-out even for regular cyclists so you must train and be prepared for long stints between rest-stops in the saddle!

We also advise that you have previously trained and cycled at night in urban areas, and ideally with other cyclists so you can experience the same conditions as you will on the night!

GPS topography and route information will be released one month prior to departure and a training schedule can be found in the Participant Area.

How will I find my way?

The route will be well signed (using reflective signage with glow sticks where appropriate), you will also be issued with personal rider maps as a back-up.  Support cyclists are embedded to the ride to assist at awkward junctions and provide encouragement up the hills!

What if I get lost?

You will probably be riding in small groups or as part of a larger peloton of perhaps 25 riders for most of the way so it is very unlikely that you would lose the route. In the unlikely event that you do lose your way along the ride - we have a control room set up for you to speak to one of the team to aid you back on track, and we also have support vehicles and teams roaming the route who can be deployed to find you should you need.

What if I suffer a mechanical problem?

You are advised to get your bike thoroughly serviced and a bike MOT conducted at your local cycle shop before joining the ride. There will be professional bike mechanics on hand at the start for last-minute tweaks and also at rest-stops for problems incurred along route. These mechanics also patrol the route in support vehicles and will stop to assist as required.

What do I need to bring?
Upon signing up to the challenge you will have access to a full equipment list and you should provision for wet/cold weather – particularly as we will be cycling at night where temperatures can plummet even in September. Ideally you will cycle with a small day pack/saddle bag/panniers carrying what you need for the duration of the cycle with all of the items you will need!

What’s it like cycling at night?

Very different to cycling by day! Especially when cycling as part of a group. Obviously visibility is reduced but also depth perception and judging distances becomes more difficult. It is a skill which you are advised to practice in the company of others and be comfortable with riding long distances in the dark and relying upon your cycle lights only. You will also receive a night cycling guide once signed up to the challenge to advise on what to watch out for when cycling in the dark.

How do I join and leave the event?
Pre-joining advice is posted in the Participant Area and you should provision to transport yourself, your bike, and your personal baggage to the start in London ideally being dropped off by friends or family, cycling, or joining by public transport.

How do I transport my bike back from the finish?
The Halloween Moonride is a loop so you will be cycling your bike to the finish!

How should I select my start time?
When signing up to the challenge you will need to select your preferred start time window for the night - we will endevour to allocate a preferred start time based on your preference.

If you are signing up as part of a larger team, or with a group of friends we recommend you all choose the same start time window so you can all set off together!

What happens to my baggage?
There will be an option baggage service for transporting your baggage from the start to the finish of the challenge - the full costs and how to book will be available once you have signed up to the challenge.

What insurance do I require?
Participants on Moonriders are insured under a comprehensive policy taken out by Event Organisers Action Challenge in respect of Personal Liability and Accident Cover.

Please refer to the Insurance Advice as issued in the Participants Area for further details.

Bike insurance is not compulsory but highly recommended and protects your bike against damage, theft, and loss. Please note that neither the organisers Action challenge, nor the Charities accept any liability whatsoever in respect of damage, theft, or loss of personal property (including bikes!) whilst on the Event howsoever caused.

You are advised to bring a bike lock which will be used to secure your cycle in the start and finish pens.

What happens if I don’t fulfil my fundraising pledge?

If you have chosen to fundraise the minimum sponsorship option to fundraise for your chosen charity then you have committed to reach your goal. 50% of your fundraising target (£125) is due to be paid into your charity 4 weeks prior to the challenge - however at this stage if you haven't made your target then you will forfeit your place on the challenge - or you can choose to pay the balance.

In 2012 the average sum of fundraising for each rider was £500 - we know that initially £300 might seem like a high target however we can assure you that once you start your fundraising then the money will soon start to roll in and both ourselves and your chosen charity will be on hand to support you all the way.

Does my pledge include Gift Aid?

No - the £250 fundraising target is without Gift Aid – we advise to speak to your charity about claiming Gift Aid on all of your donations.

Who do I speak to for queries regarding fundraising?

Your nominated charity will supply you with a point of contact for additional fundraising support, advice, and materials when you receive your Welcome Pack. The charity contact details will be included in your welcome sign up email!

Can I join as part of a team?
Absolutely – but for administrative purposes you need to register as individuals.

We believe that the more Moonriders the better - so encourage your friends, colleagues, family members and anyone you know to join you on the challenge!

What happens if I cannot take part?

Your deposit is "non-refundable” but we review cancellations on a case by case basis, and riders may be able to transfer deposits onto a future ride.

If you have collected fundraising monies then there are strict rules surrounding the refund of donations to donors or the notification to them that you will not be participating and you must seek guidance from your nominated charity.

Can I fundraise for another charity who aren't listed on the website?
Yes - however your preferred charity would need to register with us first. If there is a charity you would like to fundraise for, then just fill out the charity name when registering and we'll contact them! Your charity pays a fee of between £75-£95 (depending on their recruitment levels) to the event organiser (Action Challenge), for services associated with marketing and organising the event, and this will be explained to them prior to them officially joining Moonriders.
